Beach Football which is also known as Beach Soccer, Beach Footie or Beasal, is a variant of association football. The game is played on a beach, or some form of sand between two teams of five and emphasises skill, agility and shooting at goal.
Popularity
Whilst football has been played informally on beaches for many years. Rules for the game were introduced in 1992, being set up to develop the sport for what we now know as beach soccer and which has led to the sports rapidly growing populartity.
Description
Each team consists of five players (including the goalkeeper), an unlimited amount of substitutions are permitted, from a selection of 5 players. The game is split up into three twelve minute periods. A beach soccer pitch is considerably smaller than a regular football pitch, measuring 35-37m (38-40yds) X
26-28m (28.4-30.6yds).
Three referees officiate the match. Two on the pitch and one off. Any fouls committed lead to a free kick on goal, which has to be taken by the player who was fouled.
Dedication
The irregularity of the soft-sand playing surface leads to a totally different style of play to that which is played in regular football, in Beach Football players must improvise. The compact pitch is much smaller than a regular football pitch, which allows players to score from anywhere on the sand. This leads to high scoring games.
