Filigree is the delicate and intricate ornamental craft of twisting or soldered together threads of fine wire, often of silver or gold. Filigree is often described as a jewel work.
Popularity
Filigree work has gone through many different periods of popularity, having an extremely high point with Greek and Etruscan filigree of the 6th to the 3rd centuries BC. And in decorative religious works in medieval Europe in the 6th to 12th centuries
Ability
Although everyone has the basic skill to twist wires together, In filigree more than most other activities, the work of the craftsman shows supreme. Practise, patience and dedication are all very necessary skills to aquire.
Description
Filigree consists of curling, twisting and plaiting fine pliable threads of metal wire, and uniting them at their points of contact with each other, by means of gold or silver solder. Aided by the use of a blowpipe. Small grains of the same metals or semi precious beads are often set in the eyes of volutes, on the junctions, or at intervals, so that they will set off the wire-work effectively. The more delicate work is generally protected by framework of stouter wire.
