Field Archery offers a diversity of shooting styles, and seemingly endless variations of equipment with great variety in the courses/targets to be shot. There is one single intent... to hit the specific point on the target that you are aiming for.
Popularity
As an outdoor activity it is enjoyed by many people and not limited by age or gender.
Location
Events take place across the length and breadth of the UK and Europe, many hold their own open-competitions. It is not restricted to a specific season. The ideal Field Archery course will be set in woods with steep slopes and ground variations.
Age
Most clubs have a minimum age of 8 with no upper age limit, and there is a provision for under 12's in the rules. Without doubt more physical than target archery, it still demands high levels of concentration but with a wider spectrum of skills.
Ability
There are no restrictions, but the basics of holding and aiming must be achievable, as is the ability to move over rough ground.
Description
Field Archery, is a day of shooting in the woods, groups of archers negotiate the course and shoot arrows at each of the targets, walking from one target to the next. The distances walked are determined by the space and the course setter's ability to set out 14 or 28 targets in safety. The sort of round and distances shot can vary widely. The targets can be anything from a picture of an animal to a life-size 3D crocodile. The archers then walk to the target, add up their score and move on.
Dedication
Whilst one of the common objectives of archery is to hit what you are aiming at, there are far easier ways of hitting targets; the use of a rifle for example. This leads to the conclusion that archers are enjoying doing it the hard way, using their own strength and co-ordination to achieve a successful hit. Interestingly the sport recognises this and allows a wide variety of equipment which can be used to help hit the target. Sights, stabilisers and bows can provide a mechanical advantage.
Potential
There are currently 3 championship events: Scottish Champs - Easter weekend. 3D Champs - Bank Holiday weekend, end of May. National Champs - 3rd weekend in September. To be eligible to shoot at a Champs, conditions do apply.
