A non-competitive interest for mixed ability groups whose numbers depend on the size of the project and the number of volunteers available.

Popularity
BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) have hundreds of volunteers all over the UK, undertaking local projects, UK Holiday Break projects and Overseas projects. Other schemes work with and provide benefit to local authorities, communities and land owners.

Location
Conservation is very much an outdoors activity which is active throughout the year.
Conservation projects are located all over the country, in both rural and urban areas.

Age
Suitable for ages 16 and upward, although accompanied children are welcome on family natural break holidays, and special young people's projects.

Ability
There are no physical restrictions but you do have to use common sense about what you undertake and the degree of work involved.

Description
Conservation is for people of all ages whose common interest is the help to protect Britain's beautiful landscapes and wildlife, discovering talents they never knew they had. Planting trees and managing woodlands drystone walling / fencing, path laying and clearing, hedge laying and protecting special habitats. A conservation working holiday (natural break) will teach you through experienced team leaders all the skills necessary. There are local groups and holiday available all over the British Isles and also International conservation holidays.

Dedication
You can become an active member of a local group, working at weekends on local projects or taking a natural break at any time of the year. The amount of time put in is completely up to you. The BTCV believes that by involving training and educating people in the theory and produce of environmental management, Britain's wildlife and countryside will come to enjoy the protection and practical support of the wider community. To this end, the BTCV runs training courses to develop skills each year.

Potential
The BTCV creates equal opportunities to become a team leader a leader of a natural break holiday or a local officer in charge of a range of projects. It can be an introduction to opportunities in the ever increasing number of openings in conservation work worldwide.

There is a very wide range of books covering the crafts and abilities associated with conservation. The BTCV magazine 'The Conserver', which is free to all members, covers the general subject of conservation and associated projects.

There are no costs in become an active member of BTCV. But our UK and International holidays cost from £100 - £690 depending on type of accommodation (food is provided)
