Eventing is an Olympic equestrian sport which comprises of three disciplines dressage, cross-country and show-jumping. Eventing is a sport in which males and females compete equally against each other.
Popularity
With the increase in number of people not only taking up horse riding, but looking for a ever more competitive activity, eventing once an exclusively military exercise, has become popular as a worldwide activity with both competitors and spectators.
Location
Eventing is solely an outdoor activity, for although the dressage and showjumping sections are competed within an arena, the cross country section needs a large area of undulating open countryside, preferably part wooded.
Age
Eventing as an extremely demanding activity of both horse and rider, restrictions are by proven ability rather than age, although it is an activity not normally undertaken by young people under the age of sixteen years.
Ability
Before undertaking eventing as a competitive activity, both the horse and rider should have a proven ability of the three individual disciplines required. Before the last phase, horses are inspected by a vet to ensure their soundness to continue.
Description
The dressage phase (held first) comprises an exact sequence of movements ridden in an enclosed arena. The judges are looking for balance, rhythm, suppleness and most importantly, obedience. The next phase, cross-country, requires both horse and rider to be in excellent shape and to be brave and trusting of each other. The last phase, showjumping, tests the technical jumping skills of the horse and rider, including suppleness, obedience, finess, and athleticism.
Dedication
To compete at anything other than novice level takes total dedication. The horse must be in supreme fitness to compete, and receive constant schooling and practice of jumping all expected obstacles. Eventing is a team sport requiring trust and understanding of both horse and rider, there are no short cuts to achieving this.
Potential
There are many local eventing competitions each a personal achievement. we are fortunate enough to host two of the worlds most prestigious annual competitions; the Badminton Horse Trials and the Burghley Horse Trial. Not forgetting the Olympics.
