Until the advent of the steam engine and later the petrol and diesel engine, horses were the commonest pulling power. These beautiful animals are now mainly kept by enthusiasts for working exhibition and to prevent the breeds from becoming extinct.
Popularity
The number of heavy horses is minute compared to the number kept at the beginning of the last century, it is now restricted to a dedicated band of enthusiasts. whether working or showing, you are sure to attract a crowd of awestruck onlookers.
Location
To keep these magnificent animals in the conditions they deserve needs a stable and several acres of land. Showing and working competitions are found in one form or another right across the country, all through the year.
Age
There is no formal age restriction on the keeping, showing or working of horses. The keeping of a Heavy horse is an ideal family activity, in which all members can become passionately involved. A heavy horse will become a member of the family.
