Knitting is the looping together of a strand of yarn (wool) to create a warm garment. Jerseys gloves and hats being the commonest. Knitting is an activity for one, but that can be done anywhere and whilst chatting or watching TV.

Popularity
Knitting is a usefull craft that has been passed down through the years usually from grandmother to grandaughter and mother to daughter, in the days before television this was seen as a conventional and pleasing past time and this is still so today.

Location
Knitting is an activity mainly carried on in the home, but with many local groups meeting together, to share ideas. Exhibitions and competitions are held across the country throughout the year attracting thousands of visitors.

Age
With the basics being easy to learn, this safe and satisfying craft is both useful and an artistic craft that is suitable and compelling to a wide age range from young children to the elderly.

Ability
Of all the needle-crafts knitting is the least dependant on good eyesight, nimble fingers and the ability to follow a pattern, being more of a necessity. Knitting is a very relaxing, social and therapeutic activity.

Description
The simplest of knitting consists of just to basic stitches; knit and pearl, and garments can be successfully created using just these too stitches. different textures can be achieved by using different thicknesses of wool. Multi coloured or pattered pieces are simply achieved by joining the new or different coloured wool at the appropriate time. Of all the needle-crafts knitting can be the simplest, competent knitters often knit while watching television or holding a conversation.

Dedication
Knitting is said to be like riding a bike, once you have learnt how to knit you never forget. Once learnt as a child, and discontinued for the more popular activities of youth, Knitting can be taken up at any later stage of life when time allows or inclination beckons. Although an activity often associated with women, many men knit, knitting has been a very popular pastime with professions that have long periods of isolation, many sailors and light house keepers created very fine examples.

Potential
Knitting can be a usefull and relaxing pastime to be enjoyed by the individual and admired by the family and friends, or it can be a highly competitive activity. With competitions held locally, nationally and internationally.

Cost
Knitting by hand needs very little in the way of equipment, a set of knitting needles (different sizes are needed for different thickness of wool used), costing a few pounds. A knitting pattern to follow,(these can cost a pound or so, or can be found within magazines). And the wool to be used for the intended garment, wool is nowadays not a cheap item, (to purchase the wool often costs more than to purchase a ready made garment.
