Popularity
Not as popular as other athletic events, due to technical difficulties in staging.
The Steeplechase has been a mens Olympic event since the inception of the modern Olympics. Women's 3,000 mtrs steeplechase appeared the first time at the 2008 games.

Location
Running the steeplechase is a summer outdoor athletic stadium activity. Athletic clubs with access to athletic tracks can be found in towns and cities across the country, senior schools and collages often have athletic facilities that can be used.

Age
Because of the fixed heights and width of the barriers encountered, and of the distance of the run, in the steeplechase it is not an activity for children. Athletes often turn to steeplechase, as a variation later in their athletic career.

Ability
Steeplechase originated in Britain as a race between village or town church steeples. The runners would take the shortest route, jumping low stone walls and ditches as short cuts. akin to an urban cross-country running event.

Description
The Olympic steeplechase is competed over 3000m it comprises of twenty eight barriers and seven water jumps. The barriers may be jumped, vaulted or stood on, the water may be jumped, stepped in or run through.

Dedication
To be a successful steeplechase runner an athlete must put in the endurance training of a distance runner, as well as that of a hurdler. Steeplechase although only 3000mtrs is an endurance race, due to the barriers encountered, which disrupt stride patterns, sap strength and concentration.

Potential
The Steeplechase is a competition held within an athletic meeting. The local club athletes progression potential is Club competitions Inter club and county competitions Nationals European championships World championships Olympic games

Cost
The only costs related to steeplechase are an athletes personal athletic clothing and club membership fees. All steeplechase equipment is club or stadium supplied.
