Model making ships and boats is the construction or a replica of full sized models, some are kit form and some are made from scratch and to drawings. Some like model cars are powered and built for racing.
Ships, yachts, boats and sailboats fascinate one and all. Not everyone can own sailboats. But now there is every reason for you to rejoice with the vast range of ever popular kits available giving every bit as much fun and joy.
There are various clubs through out the UK of varying memberships, such as static modelling, and the more up to date racing forms and competition.
Age is immaterial, if you have the incentive or the love of the hobby it is there for all age groups.
Ideally you will have an understanding of woodworking, reading plans and have a sense of design. You need steady hands and lots of patience as modelling can take some considerable time.
Ship models (or model ships) are scale representations of sea-going vessels. Ship models have traditionally been built of wood, though today many amateur kits are mostly or totally styrene plastic. A smaller number of model ships are constructed out of alternative materials, including sheet metal, various resins (notably fiberglass) and even bone. The level of detail and craftsmanship can range from crude primitives to more detailed models that achieve museum quality.
Dedication to this hobby is dependant on the standard you wish to achieve and how much time you want to put in. Ready made models are available or can be made to order. There are kits ranging from plastic and styrene plastic to metal and wood. Then there is the powered side for racing where great dedication is found and the most enjoyment of the hobby for some.
Potential is to display your achievements at local fairs, county shows and exhibitions. Also to be involved in competition races via inter-club activities.
There is a wealth of information about on this hobby from magazines, to modelling shops and information through the HIPS directory.
Cost for this subject is as varied as the standard you wish to achieve from a few pounds to hundreds.
