Hill Climbing is a twisty course that is laid out, up a steep hill. The objective is to climb the hill as fast as you can and timed electronically with start and finish crossing a linked light beam.

Popularity
Speed Hill Climbing in the UK is on the up. Mainly because it has many classes from a standard mini to an F1 type vehicle. These events include camping so it is not just a day out, but an exciting break for all the family competing and spectating.

Location
Location is where there is a (minus explitive) a big hill with bends and a straight.

Age
You must have a driving license so age is the minimum national driving age.

Ability
Cars running in road going condition must be taxed/insured and have current M.O.T Cert, if applicable. Tyres should comply with general regs, unless otherwise specifically allowed under participating championship rules.

Description
The Motor Sport known as Hill climbing goes back nearly as far as the car it self. Basically its driving a Motor Vehicle up a tarmac hill as fast as is possible. The cars are timed by breaking a beam of light at the start and the finish. Usually a driver would get four attempts, two practice and two competition runs. Times are usually very close, with 100th of a second often deciding a class. There are classes for most types of vehicles, from a Mini to a Formula 1 car!

Dedication
Though the events have many classes the optimum reason is to see some spectacular scenes like single seater racing cars with ex-F1 engines producing 680+ horsepower accelerate from 0-60 mph in under 2 seconds off the startline. The current record is in a Gould single seater racing car with a 3.5 litre V8 Cosworth engine which scaled a course in 23.86. Is this dedication or just sheer fun, I think it is both.

Potential
This sport is localised to a couple of areas in the UK, so the events in themselves are a break away involving camping or caravan and a great family break with nothing short of excitment throughout the event.

Closely Related Activities
Related activities include many things depending on your involvement from club activities to helping organising an event and of course competing.

Cost
Hillclimb cars come in three categories, split into smaller groups according to the rules of championship at a particular meeting, and then into classes according to engine capacity. The main categories are for production cars, sports racing cars and single-seater racing cars. So cost is really dependant on what you want to race. There are also entry fees that vary from year to year, as well as costs for camping or parking a caravan.
