Triple Jump is an Olympic athletic field event competed by both men and women. It involves a sprint run up to get forward impetus for a three phase jump. And it is also known at the lower levels by the very descriptive name of Hop, Step and Jump.

Popularity
In the last five years the competition has grown both in popularity, as well as in the number of participating athletes.

Location
Athletic clubs and organisations throughout the UK hold many local and national events, with weekly practises.

Age
In principle there are no set age restrictions for triple jumping, however most clubs and competitions set their own limits so it is worth checking with the organisers. Competitive triple jumpers rarely compete after their mid thirties.

Ability
Necessary abilities are the ability to sprint for the run up, great leg strength for both the take offs and the landings, also balance and coordination during the flight of the jumps. Triple jumping is a very technical event.

Description
The triple jump is run to long jump rules with extra rules for the actual triple jump. The run way continues past the take off point to facilitate the hop and the step (for international competition this must be a minimum of 13m). The jumping action is the hop the competitor must land on the foot from which he took off, for the step he must land on the other foot, the jump the trailing part of the body is the measure point. The distance jumped is the total distance covered by the three elements.

Dedication
If to be competed seriously triple jumping is an activity that demands dedicated training, not only does it need sprint training and long jump training but tremendous leg strength, to withstand the landing impact of the middle parts of the jump, (landing on, and taking off from one leg at speed). There are a number of different jumping styles to be mastered, The Stride Jump, The Hang Style and The Hitch-Kick.

Triple jumping is a competition held within an athletic meeting. The local club athletes progression potential is Club competitions Inter club and county competitions Nationals European championships World championships Olympic games

Cost
Long and triple jump equipment is supplied by the athletic club, as it is expensive and not easily transportable. Personally the triple jumper must pay club membership fees, these vary depending on the facilities offered and the status of the club. And must also purchase normal personal athletic clothing.
