Jazz is often difficult to define, but improvisation is a key element of the form. Improvisation has been since early times an essential element in African and African-American music.

Popularity
Jazz has always had a strong presence in the UK. There a few towns and cities where you will not be able to find the odd session and many have extensive and thriving scenes. Music education in schools and brass bands has ensured its revival.

Location
Significantly London holds the most clubs but every city and other places have clubs through the UK.

Age
Anyone with a musical ability can play Jazz.

Ability
With the attitude of Jazz being contemporary and laid back improvisation, anyone with a musical flare and can play and harmonies by ear can play in these gatherings. Jazz is about feeling more than reading what is otherwise complicated music.

Description
Jazz has roots in the combination of Western and African music traditions, including spirituals, blues and ragtime, stemming from West Africa, western Sahel, and New England's religious hymns, hillbilly music, and European military band music. After originating in African American communities near the beginning of the 20th century, jazz styles spread in the 1920s, influencing other musical styles. The origins of the word jazz are uncertain. The word is rooted in American slang.

Dedication
Jazz became more important, and more separate as its own genre, in Britain during World War II. The war led to an increase in bands to entertain the troops and these bands began to refer to themselves as jazz musicians more often. The period also saw an increased interest in American musicians who also toured in military bands. This increased interest in jazz continued after the war died of a bit in the sixties and through much dedication has a revival in Britain.

Potential
Jazz is as much a personal thing as well as a group activity. As it is mostly performed in pubs, it is open to all comers.

Closely Related Activities
