Needlework is a collective term for the ancient and ever popular handicraft of decorative sewing and textile arts, often extended to include knitting. needlework is relaxing and an activity that gives much personal satisfaction.

Popularity
Needlework is a fine craft that has been passed down through the years usually from grandmother to grandaughter and mother to daughter, in the days before television this was seen as a conventional and pleasing past time and this is still so today.

Location
Needlework is an activity mainly carried on in the home, but with many local groups meeting together, to share ideas. Exhibitions and competitions are held across the country throughout the year attracting thousands of visitors.

Age
With the basics being easy to learn, this safe and satisfying craft is both useful and an artistic craft that is suitable and compelling to a wide age range from young children to the elderly.

Ability
A piece of needlework can truly be described as a work of art. Desirable abilities to posses are; good sight, nimble fingers, a creative mind and patience. The secret to success is to start simple, and not to be over ambitious with choice of subject.

Description
Cross Stitch, Embroidery, Knitting, Lace making, Patchwork, Quilting, Tapestry and Crochet, are all examples of needlecraft all with similarity's but each using very different and individual techniques. Each of the individual needlecraft techniques has its own use, some being purely decorative whilst others are usefull and made for a practical reason. All can be considered as attractive works of art.

Dedication
Needlework is an activity that can be undertaken when the mood takes you, often pieces remain unfinished for long periods before being returned too. Needlework like the work of an artist becomes a passion that you hate to put down, and cant wait to get back to, and like the golfer you are never entirely satisfied, always trying to improve or try new techniques.

Potential
Needlework can be a relaxing pastime to be enjoyed by the individual and admired by the family and friends, or it can be a highly competitive activity. With competitions held locally, nationally and internationally.

Cost
The cost of needlecraft varies considerably, from an embroidery where the only cost is the cost of the chosen thread, to knitting where the chosen fibre (wool) is the main constituent and is much more costly on a time spent basis. Most expensive of all is, if you frame your finished items to exhibit on your wall as a picture or competitively, frames and framing can be very expensive. (Learn to frame for yourself, 464).
