Pelota is a very fast ball game played in a walled court played by two people or several teams. Players attempt to hit a ball (pelota) with a wicker basket (cesta) against the front scoring wall, so that their opponents will be unable to return it.
Location
Pelota originated in northern Spain, it is now played played across the world mainly in countries with a history of high Spanish immigrants.
Ability
Pelota is a very phisicaly demanding and dangerous sport, helmets must always be worn.
Description
The ball must be served against the front wall so that it will return into the serving zone, the opponent must catch the pelota in the cesta before it lands or before it has bounced more than once, the pelota must be caught and returned to the front wall in a continuous motion. The court is divided into fifteen numbered areas the serving zone is between area four and seven, Points are gained when an opponent fails to return the pelota, does not return it to the front wall in a continuous movement.
Dedication
The pelota is a hard rubber cored ball with a 5cm diameter and weigh 4.5oz The cesta is a wicker basket made to the individual players specification, it consists of a chestnut frame covered with woven reed, typically 60cm long and taped to the players hand.
