Amateur dramatics offers a whole range of opportunities, not only to those who want to perform on the stage, but to any of the many necessary skills needed to put on a theatrical performance.
Location
Most local communities have a theatrical group of some sort, performing in the local village hall and practising in each others home.
Age
Any age can and do act, from children acting in the school play, a common spring board into amateur dramatics, but it must be remembered that in period productions the ages and to some degree appearance is matched to that of the character.
Ability
In local amateur dramatics ability is gained by experience and from help and direction from within the group. Some of the background skills such as electrical work do need to be carried out by competent and fully qualified personnel.
Description
Amateur dramatics gives you the opportunity to perform in a dramatic period play, followed by a modern day who dun it followed by a fast moving farce or flamboyant pantomime. On a personal level it gives you the opportunity to speak in a whole range of dialect from a range of time. The thrill and satisfaction achieved from appearing in a well received production has to be experienced to be appreciated and is the greatest spur to succeed.
Dedication
The amount of time necessary depends on the roll you are given, a staring roll demands far more time than a non speaking walk on part. What ever roll or task you take on you are the member of a team and you must give the necessary dedication. It is only for one production, and you can adjust the time you give when the next production is being cast.
Potential
The potential is to progress from a non speaking walk on part, to a speaking roll, to that of a main character. And the dream of many is that they may be seen and given a part in a professional theatre or television.
