Operetta (little opera) is a performance art-form similar to opera, though it generally deals with less serious topics. Operetta can contain spoken dialogue between songs. And often involves the wearing of theatrical costumes.

Popularity
Although not as popular as the middle of the twentieth century, Operetta in common with other performing arts has seen a distinct increase of interest over recent years.

Location
Amateur operatic and dramatic societies can be found in towns and villages across the country. Casting and rehearsing in cast members homes and local halls. Where as public performances require a hall with a stage or small provincial theatre.

Age
Although there are no official age restrictions to performing in operetta, there are very few casting opportunities for young people under the age of fifteen or sixteen years.

Ability
An operatic performance offers far more opportunities than as a performer; seamstresses, make up, scenery and stage direction are all vital roles. An operetta's cast will normally be classically trained or have some experience of operatic singing.

Description
Operetta is often considered less serious than opera, although this has more to do with the often comic plots than with the caliber of the music.

Dedication
Operetta offers opportunities for varied levels of commitment and dedication, where as a leading role will need to give more time than a member of the chorus or some back stage positions. Most amateur societies try and match their forth coming productions to the members available, to give all an active and satisfying involvement. Operetta is an activity with equal opportunities for both sexes who perform along side each other, the male, female ratio may vary with the production being staged.

Potential
Although to most operetta is a personally satisfying and rewarding hobby and pastime, to others it is a stepping stone to a professional theatrical career.

Closely Related Activities
Amateur dramatics, Operetta, Opera and the modern musical are all closely related. The difference being, (although often blurred) operetta and opera use classical singers who can act, whereas a modern musical uses actors who can sing.

Cost
The costs of staging an operatic performance are huge, these are minimised by an admission charge to performances and other fund raising schemes within the society. Any short comings having to be made up by members.
