Age
As a leisure activity it is an ideal family holiday, being enjoyed by all ages from eight to eighty. As a competitive sport it is most commonly competed by competitors in their twenties and thirties.
Ability
To enjoy skiing the only necessary ability is a bit of nerve and the determination to succeed, as all the tuition to succeed and progress at all levels is available and plentiful at most ski destinations. The lack of a fear of heights is desirable.
Description
Skiing sports are divided into three basic groups: Alpine (551), Nordic and Biathlon. Alpine includes downhill (552), slalom (557), giant slalom and super G races and the alpine combined event. Nordic includes cross country (725), ski jumping (556) and the Nordic combined. Biathlon (activity 60) combines skiing and rifle shooting.
Dedication
As a leisure activity no regular dedication is necessary, casual visits to a dry slope is helpful as is general fitness. As a competitive sport, skiing demands total dedication, as the competition is really strong and the sport extremely physically demanding with no room for errors.
