Skipping the art of jumping a twirling rope so that it passes over the head and under the feet. Skipping is a much underrated activity, it is a means of getting fit, a fun playground activity and a serious competitive sport practised the world over.
Popularity
As a playground activity and means of getting fit it is commonly practised throughout the world, as a competitive sport it is strongest in the Americas and it is at the present time enjoying a massive revival in the UK.
Location
Skipping is the most versatile of activities, it can be practised both indoors and outside, Skipping can be practised in the smallest of gardens or back yard, in fact anywhere there is room to twirl a rope safely.
Age
Skipping is an activity that can can be enjoyed by anyone from around the age of five upwards. There is no upper age limit as the speed of rope and length of time spent skipping is totally up to the individual. and ideal way of keeping fit.
Ability
Sometimes skipping is performed with two twirling ropes this is called double Dutch and is significantly more difficult. As a cardiovascular workout one can burn up to 1300 calories from one hours vigorous routine.
Description
A solo jumper twirls and jumps the rope or when a team it can be practised by a minimum of three one either end of the rope twirling while the other jumps. Athletes compete in individual and team events. In freestyle routines the jumper has a set time to perform a combination of skills, in many competitions the routine is choreographed to music. During speed events the athletes must complete a determined amount of successful jumps within a specified amount of time.

To many Skipping is a fun activity, others consider it a sport. Serious skippers train rigorously year round. Competitive Rope jumping takes immense strength, endurance, focus and patience. The combination of footwork and aerobic workout make skipping a popular form of exercise for athletes, especially boxers and wrestlers. Skipping improves cardiovascular fitness and co-ordination and increases endurance and muscular strength.

Examples of competitive potential are The world speed record for thirty second speed is one hundred and eighty eight jumps. There are more than nine hundred and fifty tricks /techniques of rope skipping to be mastered.
