An activity combining all of the skills of a hunter and those of the photographer, the aim being to capture a lasting image of an animal or piece of animal behaviour rarely seen or appreciated by the casual onlooker. An activity best undertaken alone.
Popularity
A very popular activity in its simpler locations.
Location
The location by necessity is that of the animal or bird you are intending to photograph, be it in some rugged isolated and inaccessible rural area, or in your own urban back garden. (each can be equally challenging and rewarding).
Age
Although photography is an activity that can be successfully done by children as young as four or five years of age, the patience and stealth necessary to stalk animals is rarely achieved by children.
Ability
To achieve successful results, other than those of the lucky opportunist, need a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the intended subject, as well as the skills of a competent photographer.
Description
A competitive activity in the sense of competing with the animal, to get into the ideal position to take the once in a lifetime perfect recorded image of the desired animal. The subject can either be stalked (crept up on) or with previous knowledge of the animals behaviour and movements lay in wait (using a hide or camouflage), hoping your cunning and stealth will bring the desired photographic opportunity.
Potential
Although there are many photographic competitions that can be entered, to most people the recorded memory and personal satisfaction obtained is potential enough.

Cost
To stalk anything but the simplest of subject does take a better camera, that will probably cost a £100 upwards. The cost of travel must also be taken into account when undertaking more exotic subjects or locations.
