A competitive team game with up to thirteen players per side of whom only seven can be in the water at one time. Water polo originated in Britain in the 1870s and has been an Olympic sport since 1900. It is played in the O.k.. and throughout the world

At the present time, about 200 clubs in the U.K.
Location
Indoor or (in sunnier climes) outdoor pools. Mainly in urban areas where there are large swimming clubs.
Age
No age limits - most players are between 10 and 50 many go on into their 60s but internationals tend to be in their 20s. Teams exist in age groups. Males and females generally mix in training sessions but have to separate in competitive matches.
Ability
Good health is essential. Minor disabilities are not a bar. It can be enjoyed at all levels of ability ranging from a light hearted social activity to higher level competitive areas of the game. Injuries are rare as water polo is a non-contact sport
Description
An exciting team game, combining the best elements of soccer, rugby and basketball and putting them into the swimming pool. Competitive games comprise of four, seven minute quarters. The team consists of a goalie and six Players who, while swimming, try to score goals by passing or punching the ball one handed into the opponents goal. The game involves the fun of swimming, and is excellent for fitness.
Dedication
Most clubs have training sessions of one hour a week, some of which will be competitive games. Higher standards require more dedication. Clubs will provide coaching for you to progress as far as you wish (to reach the highest levels you may have to travel to a stronger club).
