Keeping a dairy is a very personal activity, and unlike any other. It is a record of your life the happenings and the feelings the good times and the bad. It is an invaluable personal reference of family dates.
Popularity
As an activity that is private and very personal to the individual, it is very difficult to gauge the popularity. Only when a person dies or refers back to records recorded within the diary, does a persons keeping of a diary become common knowledge.
Location
Diaries are normally filled in at the end of each day, while the days events are still fresh in the mind. The diary therefore is kept in the home, or is taken with the person when they travel away from home for any prolonged period of time.
Age
A dairy can be kept by anyone of any age or background, and it is an activity that can be started at any point in a persons life. The younger a person starts recording a dairy the better, no matter how brief to begin with.
Ability
There is no special ability necessary to keeping a dairy, as it is a record of you, as you are, and of what ever ability you are.
Description
What a diarist records in there dairy is completely up to them, any thing that has happened to them or influenced them or their life on that day. Frequently recorded topics are the weather, family happenings and events, national or world events and the diarists own worries and concerns. A well kept dairy will be a fascinating and often used reference. a person who gets a reputation for being a diarist will become a constant source of reference from family and friends.
Dedication
A dairy should be kept regularly taking up no more than a few minutes at the end of each day, or perhaps each week. How much information you record is completely up to the diarist.
Two of the most famous diaries which have later been published are;
Samuel Pepys (1633-1703) one of the earliest and most widely known diarist.
And also the posthumously published "Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank, who wrote it whilst in hiding during the German occupation of Amsterdam in the 1940s.
Potential
There is no potential to keeping a dairy other than you have a complete history of the events and happenings in your life to refer back to.
Cost
The only cost involved with keeping a dairy is the annual cost of a dairy from a few pence to a couple of pounds.
