Fun Runs are distance runs, normally held over quarter, half or full marathon distances in which competitors compete against their own personal time challenges. Runners often, through personal sponsorship raise money for charities.
Popularity
Fun Runs are the most popularly competed running event. Attracting huge numbers of athletes competing in each event. The London Marathon regularly attracts 30,000 competitors, and many more bitterly disappointed applicants.
Location
Fun Runs are competed in the roads and streets of many towns and cities across the UK. The most famous being the London Marathon, followed by the half marathon distance events of The Great North and the Great South Runs.
Age
Fun Runs attract athletes of the widest age range, from children through to athletes of seventy years of age and above. Children compete over shorter distances, half, one and three miles, depending on age.
Ability
Fun Runs are events in which athletes of all ability and capability are actively encouraged to run in the same race.
Dedication
When training for the marathon the main aim is to increase fitness and build up stamina. Marathon training is a long gradual process involving many hours of road and gym training. To run a marathon, a prospective runner should start training months rather than weeks in advance. To attempt a full marathon each weeks training should include a long run, at least one and a half hours, increasing to two or more hours the last month before a race.
Potential
The potential for a Fun Runner is to Finnish or beat their own personal best time. To some it is to compete at a particular event or raise money for charity. In 2002 the London marathon runners raised thirty two million pounds for charity.

Cost
Marathon running involves no other costs than a good pair of running shoes and athletic clothing, And the race entry fee. Travel costs to far events and the cost of any accommodation necessary must however be taken into account. Race entry fees vary from around ten to twenty-five pounds, although such is the popularity of marathon running most marathons now have a restriction system on competitor numbers, (ability and ballet).
