Spelling Bees are verbal spelling competitions that can be competed by both males and females equally, although children are normally segregated into groups by age.
Popularity
Originating in the United States in the 1800s, where it is a very popular children’s competition, but only an activity of minor popularity in the UK. Until recent inclusion of competitions by the media has sparked interest and popularity.
Description
Spelling Bees normally take the form of contestants being given a series of words to spell. Words are given verbally, one at a time. Contestants can ask for a definition of the word, to make sure they understand the word being asked. They then spell the word out verbally, their first answer being the only one excepted. Early rounds in a competition are normally taken from an aggregate score of perhaps ten or twenty words, later rounds are on a knock out individual word basis.
