Canoe Polo combines paddling and ball handling skills with an exciting contact team game.
Popularity
There are several clubs situated throughout the UK for the sport of canoe polo.
Location
Pitches can be set up in swimming pools or any stretch of flat water. Canoe polo is generally played indoors during the winter season and outdoors during the summer season.
Age
Generally participants need to be 12 years of age and over.
Ability
The sport is played on still flat water and with so many paddlers on the pitch; there is no possibility of drowning! Since the sport is so safe, is it an ideal fun introduction to canoeing for beginners and youngsters.
Description
The game of canoe polo requires excellent teamwork and promotes both general canoeing skills as well as a range of other tecniques unique to the sport. The game of participated by two teams each with five players on the pitch at any one time. The object being to score goals in their opponent's net which is suspended 2 metres above the water. The ball can be either be flicked with the paddle or thrown by hand.
Dedication
The boats used are specifically designed for canoe polo and are shorter than typical kayaks at about 3m. This gives them excellent manouverability. Paddles are very light weight and designed with both pulling power and ball control in mind. Body protection, helmets and faceguards are all compulsary.
Potential
Within the UK there is a National League structure, with categories for Open, Women's and Youth competitions, with many regional events held throughout the year.
