 Utilities

These are so close to indispensable that they often come preinstalled on computers . 

	Acrobat Reader This is necessary to read the many documents distributed over the web in the pdf format.
	WinZip This compacts files, and is useful for either saving on storage space (disk) or emailing time - and hence is often necessary for accessing files distributed over the web. Windows XP does have a compression tool built-in; but those with earlier operating systems can make good use of this tool. The wizard guides you through the process.
	Anti-virus: EZ antivirus from Computer Associates If you wish to avoid the cost Norton anti-virus, et al, then EZ is a capable anti-virus from a company with a good reputation. If you cannot get the EZ to work, then the other highly recommended freebie is AVG.  Click here.
	Firewall: Zone alarms If you are not using XP (with its built-in firewall) then you may wish to enhance your security with the leading free firewall software.
	Spyware: SpyBot - search and destroy If you are having problems which your antivirus cannot remove, then this freeware may help remove lurking nasties, such as ads, trojans, premium rate diallers, etc.

  Alternative web browsers

	Opera This is smaller, faster and more keyboard friendly than Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.
	Firefox Another faster and more secure browser than IE6.

  Alternative email application

Eudora Clearer and easier to use than the various Microsoft Outlooks. Allows you to decide where your emails are stored (on your hard drive) facilitating backups, the most recent version has a built-in junk mail filter.

  MP3 player/recorder

	MusicMatch Jukebox Plays your audio CDs, converts them to MP3s (digital music files) and vice versa, and has an excellent library facility.
	Itunes The software to go with your ipod!  As with musicmatch, this rips, burns, files and plays your music.

  Chatting

	Skype If you have Broadband, this will bring you free telephony - or a penny-a-minute telephony, worldwide.
	Easy Message This is a light chat program which allows you to monitor/chat with Yahoo, MSN and ICQ all at once.
	Purevoice This records microphone input in a compressed fashion allowing you to send voice messages as email attachments.
