River angling can be either recreational or competitive. It is the art of taking fish from a river, using a hook, rod and line. The fish are attracted to the hook by a mechanical lure, artificial fly or bait, each method has its own fishing technique

Popularity
River fishing is very popular in the UK, but possibly not as popular as still water fishing. River access can sometimes be restricted by landowners. Popular river species for anglers to fish for include dace, barbel, trout, rudd, roach and perch.

Location
There are rivers situated all over the UK. An angler in the UK is legally required to hold a permit which allows the angler to fish with two rods. Anglers should check their ability to fish on a stretch of river in case it is privately owned.

Age
River angling can be enjoyed by anglers of all ages. Young children should be supervised when near the waters edge.

Ability
No specific abilities are required and often anglers are introduced to the sport at a very young age, either by their parents or through friends also keen. Rivers tend to hold a fascination with youngsters and adults still find them enchanting.

Description
Angling is a form of fishing generally associated with sport or recreational fishing. Specifically, angling is the practice of catching fish by means of an angle (hook). The hook is attached by fishing line to a fishing rod. A fishing reel is fitted to the rod which acts as a means to store, retrieving and pay out the line. Hooks which come in a variety of sizes, can be dressed with lures or bait and are attached to the line using a variety of recognised anglers knots.

Dedication
The one thing that anglers need is to be very patient. It might be a few minutes but could just as easily be several hours between catching fish. In fact many anglers will spend all day by the water and return home without any fish caught.

Potential
There are numerous competitions for the heaviest fish caught or the biggest bag of the day. Trout are the one fresh water fish that is commonly taken for food.
