Most modern poker variations require players to make the best five-card hand from a predetermined hierarchy with players placing a wager on the supposed strength of their holding.

Popularity
Poker is extremely popular and the invention of on-line poker has made it even more so. From playing with a few friends to playing against other opponents on-line, poker is big business and heavily gambled on.

Location
Can be played at home, in a casino, or even on-line on the internet. It doesn't have to be played for money, as a fun game it could be played for matchsticks.

Age
Can be played by all ages for fun, but gambling regulations apply when betting, playing on-line or in a casino.

Ability
Poker is an easy game to play but requires dedication to master. The first thing a player needs to learn is what hands beat what. It is probably a good idea to play against friends or even to play a computer version before moving on to betting.

Description
Poker is played in many variations, but most follow the same basic pattern of play. For each hand, one or more players are required to make forced bets to create an initial stake for which the players will contest. The most popular version of poker played today is a variation of community card poker called Texas Hold'em - where community cards or river, are dealt face up and shared by all players.

Dedication
There are rules which apply to all variations of poker and involve:- a standard deck of cards (jokers wild if desired), betting chips (or cash), two to eight players or more. Learning the poker hands is a must - from a royal/straight flush (five cards in sequence of the same suit/ royal flush is A,K,Q,J,10) - down to a high card (five unmatched cards), this is your basic armoury when playing the game and can be quite tricky to master at first. Once mastered the finer points of play can be learnt

Potential
Players can go from casual players to become a professional poker player. There are many tournaments in which players can earn substantial amounts of money.
