Formation dance involves a group of couples performing a choreographed routine, of normally ballroom dances competitively against other formation teams.

Popularity
A popular activity found throughout the country in larger towns and cities, where there are established ballrooms or dancing schools.

An indoor activity, danced in ballrooms

Age
Ballroom and formation dancing can be enjoyed by any physically able person between the ages of eight and eighty. There are often junior age competitions.

Ability
Necessary abilities to posses to become a successful formation dancer, include, a sense of rhythm, the ability to dance with a partner, and as a member of a highly choreographed team, and above all else, posses a sense of dedication to the team.

Description
Formation routines may be based on a particular dance, e.g., a Tango routine or Cha-cha-cha routine, or even a potpourri routine, consisting a mixture of dances of the same category. The choreography of a ballroom dance formation team includes both choreography of an individual couple and the overall pattern of movements of the couples on the stage. The routines generally feature at least some free-form, which may include movements from jazz dance, ballet, or any other type of dance.

Dedication
To become a member of a Formation team, needs far more dedication that that of a individual dancing couple. As not only does the dance have to be learnt, but the team choreography. As a team activity you will need to attend regular team practises.

Cost
The cost of dancing in a formation team can be relatively high when compared with ballroom dancing, as dress (costumes) have to be team co-ordinated.
