Working dogs and working breeds of dog can and are kept as family pets and companions as commonly as breeds of toy or show dogs, Breeds of working dog have an inbred specialist skill or instinct that is of benefit to their human masters.

Most families have at some time kept a family dog as a pet, many of these are breeds of working dog. To many their working dog is not only their means of independence but their best friend and constant companion.
