A very fast competitive game, between 2 teams of 7 players and five substitutes. trying to score goals by throwing the ball, players may dribble or pass the ball to get into a scoring position , but may not run more than three steps with the ball.
Location
Handball is normally played in sports centres, it is a game played worldwide and throughout the UK, but is strongest in the north west of England.
Age
Handball is played by male and female teams, split by three main age categories. Mini level up to twelve years. Juniors twelve to sixteen years. Senior sixteen years and over. It is unusual for players to play competitively after the age of thirty.
Ability
Handball is a very fast and strenuous sport. with players able to run with agility, and be able to catch and dribble the ball. The duration of a game is two thirty minute sessions separated by a ten minute interval.
Description
The object of the game is score most goals. Attackers pass or dribble the ball with their hands until a scoring opportunity is created. When a team loses possession it immediately forms a defencive position to protect its goal. Players may not run more than three steps without bouncing the ball one handed, and may not hold the ball for more than three seconds. the ball may be touched by any part of the body above the knee. Body blocking and interception of the ball is aloud but not snatching.
Dedication
Training sessions are held weekly of approximately one and a half hours. Competitive games are normally held at the weekend. The competitive season is October to July, but the teams generally try to train all year round.
