The long jump (formerly called broad jump) is an olympic athletic field event, competed by both males and females in which athletes after a run up, attempt to land as far from the marked take off point as possible.

Popularity
In the last five years the competition has grown both in popularity, as well as in the number of participating athletes.

Location
Athletic clubs and organisations throughout the UK hold many local and national events, with weekly practises.

Age
In principle there are no set age restrictions for long jumping, however most clubs and competitions set their own limits so it is worth checking with the organisers. Competitive long jumpers rarely compete after their mid thirties.

Ability
Long Jumping is a combination of speed and specific strength, and requires co-ordination, skill and timing. Plus an innate ability to measure space, time and distance at high speeds, this is spatial awareness which all elite jumpers possess.

Description
Competitors sprint down a runway and jump as far as they can off a slightly raised wooden board into a pit filled with fine gravel or sand. The minimum distance from the board to the indentation made by the competitor in the gravel is measured. If the competitor starts their leap with any part of their foot in front of the board the jump is declared illegal and no distance is recorded. Each competitor usually has 3 attempts, and the leading eight athletes then have a further three jumps.

Dedication
The long jump is a speed event which comprises of four phases: approach run take off flight through the air landing To achieve maximum distance in the long jump the athlete will have to balance three components - speed, technique and strength. There are a number of different jumping styles to be mastered, The Stride Jump, The Hang Style and The Hitch-Kick.

Long jumping is a competition held within an athletic meeting. The local club athletes progression potential is Club competitions Inter club and county competitions Nationals European championships World championships Olympic games

Cost
Long jump equipment is supplied by the athletic club, as it is expensive and not easily transportable. Personally the long jumper must pay club membership fees, these vary depending on the facilities offered and the status of the club. And must also purchase normal athletic clothing.
