An Olympic sport, ice hockey is played by two teams on an ice rink. six players including a goalkeeper from each team are allowed on the ice at any time. The object is to hit the puck (a vulcanised rubber disk) with the stick into the opposing goal.

Popularity
Thought to have originated in its modern form in Ontario, on frozen waters in 1860, its players Crimean war veterans from the Royal Canadian Rifles. This was the first time a puck rather than a ball was used. Now played in 55 countries worldwide.

Location
Ice hockey is most commonly played in countries where natural ice occurs. In the UK ice hockey tends to be restricted to larger urban areas as it is totally reliant on artificial ice rinks for both practice and events.

Age
Although dominated by the male game, woman's ice hockey is growing rapidly. because of the nature of the game it is not an ideal game for children, players normally between fourteen and forty years of age.

Ability
Before attempting to play ice hockey you must be a competent skater, ice hockey is very fast and allows phisical contact (bumping and barging). Ice hockey claims to be the fastest team game in the world.

Description
In ice hockey only 6 players from each team may be on the ice at one time, although there are between 17/22 players in a team. Play begins with a face off, when the referee drops the puck between the sticks of two opposing players, A goal is scored when the puck legally and completely crosses the goal line. Players can be substituted at any time during play, for either tactical or phisical reasons. A game of ice hockey is played over three twenty minute periods with two fifteen minute intervals.

Dedication
The space between the goals is divided by blue lines into three zones, defence, neutral and attack each is a third of the playing area. An attacking player may only enter the attack zone from behind the puck or puck carrier. A pass cannot be made to an attacker from a teammate who is outside the attack zone., this would be called offside.

Potential
For ammeters the ultimate dream of representing their country at the Olympic games, and lure of becoming a professional player.
