A comparatively new and increasingly popular event. Iron man contests and Iron distance triathlons are competitive extreme endurance events, open to males and females, involving swimming, biking and running.

Location
Official qualifying events for the Hawaii Ironman take place annually around the world, in places such as Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, the Canary Islands (Spain), South Africa, and Europe (Sherbourne England August 2007).
Age
There is a minimum age for entering official competitions of eighteen years. There is no upper age limit although it is rare for anyone over the age of sixty five to enter.
Ability
To compete in an iron man distance event you must be incredibly fit as there are normally course cut-off times of around; Swim 2 hours 20 Min's after start time, Bike 10 hours 30 Min's after start time, Run 17 hours after start time.
Description
Iron man distance events feature three endurance events: swimming, biking, and running. It involves a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometre) sea swim ,followed directly by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometre) bike ride, followed directly by a full marathon 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometre). Time spent in transition between disciplines is counted in your overall time, there is no official break between disaplines.
Dedication
Iron man contests demand near total dedication, as the necessary fittness takes months if not years to achieve. Iron man contests are considered by many, as the most challenging phisical event in history.
Potential
The single minded ambition of all Iron man contestants is to qualify for and to compete in the Ironman World championships, (the Hawaii Ironman) an annual event based in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Cost
Iron man is not a cheap activity to pursue. Although entrance fees, equipment and clothing are relatively affordable, the big expense is accommodation and traveling to the qualifying events, which are often held across the world.
