Modern day mime originates from the start of Circus's to convey extraordinary explicit acting to an audience that required only the best in acting. Mime was formed firstly by the founders of acting the Greeks back in 275 BC.
Popularity
The popularity of Mime was happened to occasion the performance of sexuality on stage without the wording which was totally banned from public displays, and was a way around the then laws of the day.
Location
Originally Mime was performed in travelling sets of three. As far as we can tell, mime typically appealed to baser tastes and thus fostered a rather unsophisticated viewership, at least in its early phases.

It is not so much age as the ability toward interpretation that is needed.

Mime needs an extraordinary ability to portray scenes and vocals with body articulation toward suggestion that speaks to the spectator. An artistic talent owned by a few to display its characteristics with professionalism.
Description
In the post-Classical Age a form of drama called mime rose to prominence, not the silent studies-in-movement we call (panto)mime but a crude species of popular entertainment. Its origin is unknown, though some evidence suggests mime may have existed back in the Classical Age. It most likely played to a very different crowd from the one attending the high-brow entertainments produced at the Dionysia. Mime typically appealed to baser tastes and thus fostered a rather unsophisticated viewership.
Dedication
With few remaining, it is clear mime scripts were highly variable in length, and content. They tended to be short?compared to classical tragedy, coming in the form of monologues or dialogues focusing on realism and comedy. Viewed from the surviving texts, mime required little more than an audience and a place to perform. Later ones were staged on elaborate sets, utilized high technical values and contained sophisticated philosophical and literary discussions.
Potential
Mime today does have Schools available and is a good opener for getting on the stage and performing, without having to worry about verbal lines so that you can get over nerves associated with performing in front of crowds.
