Ships that are built in bottles and part of the modeller's skill is recreating a miniature version of an original, including the colours it was painted literally inside a bottle. It is a model and a puzzle all in one that has intrigued many a man.
Popularity
This is not as popular an art as say doll house making. The people who do this are very dedicated.
Location
This is obviously an indoor activity, examples can be seen at Annual fairs, Country shows, Dolls House exhibitions and some folk festivals.
Age
This is more a mature art form, though there is nothing stopping anyone with the ability or incentive to do something a little different.
Ability
Obviously considerable patience is a required ability for this activity. No special qualifications are needed other than maybe an understanding of boat/ship construction.
Description
The ship is obviously much larger than the opening in the bottle. Many people think the underside of the bottle is cut away; the ship, however, is made of wood and its sails and rigging are paper and thread. The secret is that the ship's hull is small enough to fit through the bottle's neck, but the sails and spars (the masts and sail supports) are collapsible and can be pulled into position using controlling threads.
Dedication
The hobby of building ships in bottles is not for everyone. Love of research, ships and sea lore, history, woodworking and other skills, and minute details, as well as considerable patience, are required. The finished models are surprisingly durable and are treasured possessions to leave to children and grandchildren. Competitions are held around the world and opportunities to display models, including museum exhibits, are plentiful, so many people can enjoy these creations.
Potential
The potential of this hobby is to create a family heir loom. A tremendous sense of satisfaction. There is also the ability to have your skills shown at Country and County fairs, folk festivals and exhibitions.
