Track or Stadium Running is a range of athletic events for both men and women , races range from 100m sprints to 10,000m distance races. Running is an individual event with the exception of relays, which are run by teams of four.

Popularity
Children run almost from the time they take their first steps, It is the most common of all sporting activities, being a necessary part of so many sports, other than athletics. Sportsman often run as part of their training for their favoured activity

Location
Historically running was an outdoor event but is increasingly catered for indoors, with a whole range of indoor short and middle distance events competed for in the winter months.

Age
Ages range from eight to eighty years, with individual athletes adjusting to their own desire and ability. Running is a very social sport with athletes actively helping and encouraging each other.

Ability
Running is such a diverse activity that it can be enjoyed in some form by all. Athletics has a range of disability rankings, so that everyone even with the severest disability can compete against athletes of like ability, even at Olympic levels.

Description
Running is split into three categories. Sprints are run completely in lanes, over distances shorter than 800m. Middle distances, are races run over 800m and 1500m (the 800m is run partially in lanes). Long distances are races run over 3000m, 5000m and 10000m. Relays are run by teams of four, running singularly passing a baton, in a defined area, to the next member of the team at the end of their distance, all four members of the team run the same distance, and all four must finish the race.

Dedication
Athletic running events are track sprints over 100, 200 and 400m middle distance over 800 and 1500m long distance over 3000, 5000 and 10000m relays over 100 and 400m hurdles over 100, 110 and 400m steeplechase 3000m road races marathon walks over 10, 20 and 50km. To be successful at any running distance dedicated training is essential, and should be tailored to the distance to be competed. It can be dangerous to health to run seriously without proper training.
