Rallying is a competitive motor sport that takes place on public and private roads using modified production road-legal cars. Rallies are raced over a series of stages. Consisting of stages of pure speed and predetermined ideal journey time stages.
Popularity
Rallying is a very popular sport at the "grass roots", ie motor clubs. Individuals interested in becoming involved in rallying should join their local motor club. Club rallies are usually run on public roads with the emphasis on navigation.
Location
Rallying is unique in its choice of where and when to race. Rallies take place on all surfaces and in all conditions: tarmac, gravel, sand, snow and ice, often a combination of surface. Rallies are run throughout the year, in every climate.
Age
Minimum age of 17 years. (minimum driving age of country), although navigators can in some minor events be less.
Ability
Rallying is above all else a team sport.
DRIVERS, must be experienced drivers.
NAVIGATORS, must be proficient map readers and have a good understanding of driving, weather and surface conditions. also a full knowledge of their drivers capabilities.
Description
There are two main forms: stage rallies and road rallies.
Stage Rallies are based on straightforward speed over stretches of road closed to other traffic, (commonly the professional branch of the sport).
Road rallies are the original form, held on highways open to normal traffic, where the emphasis is not on outright speed but on accurate timekeeping and navigation and on vehicle reliability, often on difficult roads and over long distances. these are primarily amateur events.
Dedication
Teams often do a reconnaissance of the course, During which, the co-driver writes down shorthand notes (the pacenotes) on how to best drive the stage. These pacenotes provide a detailed description of the course and allow the driver to predict conditions ahead and prepare for various course conditions such as turns and jumps. Other rallies provide organizer-created "route notes" also referred to as "stage notes" and disallow reconnaissance and use of other pacenotes.
Cost
From a relatively modest costing sport at the lower ammeter levels, the costs rapidly escalate to astronomic levels as you progress to the higher levels. Needing a specially tuned car and a back up team of mechanics. The higher levels of the sport can normally only be achieved with the aid of a financial sponsor.
