Mountains by their very nature involve some element of risk with those climbing caught unawares, requiring the need of a rescue service, be it professional or by dedicated volunteers, or both.

Popularity
Popularity is by organisation through professional and voluntary personnel, it has a following however with recent events the operators could do with more input from more people.

Location
Primarily these institutions are located in mountainous regions, but their skills are not confined too these regions

Age
Age is obviously a factor as there is a great deal of training involved with this and would in some cases require a driving license.

Ability
Many people come with different skills, and this is a necessary requisite in this function. From first aid to flying a helicopter and all other skills in between which forms professional teams reliant on one another.

Description
Mountain Rescue is a team event from ground search and rescue teams, base response and direction, flight crews, paramedics, radio operators and many other skills to form a team to get to unusual inaccessible places where people have been succumbed to the hazard of being lost or stranded as frequently happens in this sport or touring adventure.

Dedication
This is a highly dedicated and committed function. During the last few years there has been a considerable increase in the number of requests by the police to mountain rescue teams for search and rescue in non mountain and open country environments. These requests have included searching for children, mentally ill, elderly, confused, or potentially suicidal people missing from their home (or an institution), and searching snow bound roads for stranded motorists.

Potential
There is great potential for making very close friendships as well as discovering your own potential within extreme events that you would normally access in everyday life.

Closely Related Activities
Mountain climbing, team work, driving rescue vehicles, first aid, map reading, radio work, are some close related activities.

Cost
Cost of this is usually by voluntary donations and government grants for all the material and clothing required to carry out an operation. Courses however may be personally financed.
