The competitive athletic event of Walking, is competed by both men and women, over various distances, both as a track and road event. The over riding rule of competitive walking is that the walker must maintain unbroken contact with the ground.
Popularity
Athletic walking has suffered in popularity over the last few years due in part to the massive public interest in marathon and fun running and jogging, and in part due to the very difficult and rigidly enforced technical rules of the activity.
Location
Historically running was an outdoor event but is increasingly catered for indoors, with a whole range of indoor short and middle distance events competed for in the winter months.
Age
Due largely to rigidity of the rules athletic walking as a competitive activity is not usually taken up until an athlete is approaching twenty years of age.
Description
In an athletic walking race, the action that must be obeyed is that the walker must maintain unbroken contact with the ground. Thus the rear foot must not leave the ground before the advancing foot has made contact with the ground. The leg must momentarily straightened while a foot is on the ground. Failure to obey these rules, results in an immediate disqualification. The most commonly raced distances are. Road 20 & 50km men 10km women Track 20,000 & 50,000m men 5,000 & 10,000m women
