Netball is the most popular team sport for women in the world, played by girls and women of all ages, at schools, colleges, universities and clubs
Popularity
Netball in England continues to grow in popularity - affiliations to the governing body, England Netball, have risen by more than 20% year on year since 2004 as people join clubs and come back to the game after leaving school or college
Location
If your school or university does not have a team, check out your local newspapers or leisure centres for details of local clubs, or log onto www.englandnetball.co.uk to find details of your regional organiser, who can help you find a club
Age
Girls tend to start playing at the age of 6 or 7, and you can continue to play as long as you like!
Ability
Obviously, tall people do well at netball, particularly in defensive or shooting positions: however, centre court players can be smaller. You need to be able to catch and throw and be relatively fit, and, of course understand the rules!
Description
Netball is a fastmoving ball game played by teams of seven across a court divided into three playing areas. Players are assigned specific playing areas, according to their position, and only two players in each team, the GA and GS, can shoot once they have the ball in their team's semicircular area. Players may not move once they are in possession of the ball - instead, they must make their moves off the ball. Netball is a non-contact sport, and contact is penalised with free passes or shots.
Dedication
Most top players train every day, either at strength and conditioning or skills sessions, as well as gym work. However, most clubs and schools train once or twice a week, with players focusing on individual skills as well as team practices. Shooters are encouraged to practice their shots every day, while all players can benefit from building up stamina through running, skipping, swimming and so on.
Potential
Coaches/teachers are invited to nominate talented players for a County Sports partnership academy programme, from where players can then progress to regional screening and then on to the England Netball talent screening programme.
Cost
Players need a good, supportive pair of trainers to play netball, which are flexible and cushioned. Uniform costs vary from club to club, and by affiliating to a club, you are able to use equipment like posts, balls and bibs. Teams pay to enter leagues and other competitions, but this will be included in your affiliation fee. Many sports shops stock netballs or posts if you want to purchase one to practice with at home!
