The United Kingdoms Open University (OU) is a university dedicated to adult distance learning. OU offers around 600 courses, providing high quality university education to all who wish to realise their ambitions and fulfil their potential.

Popularity
The OU has around 150,000 undergraduate and more than 30,000 postgraduate students.

Location
Working from home or place convenient to the student. More than 25,000 OU students live outside the UK.

Age
There is a minimum age of eighteen years when the chosen course starts. There is no upper age limit.

Ability
Most Open University courses require no previous qualifications, before enrolment. A necessary ability to possess is the ability to show commitment and study alone. A very suitable way of learning for the house bound.

Description
The Open University's style of teaching is called 'supported open learning', also known as 'distance learning'. Open learning means that you will be learning in your own time by reading course material, working on course activities, writing assignments and perhaps working with other students. Supported means support from a tutor and the student services staff at Regional Centres, as well as from centralised areas such as the Library or Open University Students Association.

Dedication
Some courses include a residential or day school. These are held at various times and locations. Nearly all students are studying part-time. About 70 per cent of undergraduate students are in full-time employment. More than 50,000 students are sponsored by their employers for their studies

Potential
Professional bodies take OU qualifications very seriously. Not only are OU students valued for their academic and professional skills, but many employers also recognise the dedication needed to study part-time.

Possible costs could be: A 9-month Beginner's course, £395 A 15 months study course, £915 An Open degree, 5 years study course for about £3500, A BSc (Honours) degree 6 years study for about £4000, An MBA: 3 years study for about £11000, If you live in the UK and have a dependent partner, children, are unemployed, or are receiving benefits OU may pay all or part of your course fees for you, and help you meet other study costs.
