Picture cleaning and restoration is an activity that must not be tried before first getting a proper knowledge of the subject. The untrained will most likely do un-repairable damage to the work. Once mastered there are few more satisfying interests.
Ability
This is an activity of great skill, before attempting to clean any picture of value or personal importance the subject should be fully researched, and even then only after you had experimented on pieces of no importance. An activity of caution.
Description
WARNING altering true antiques almost always decreases their value, whether or not they look better to you.
ALWAYS TAKE EXPERT ADVICE BEFORE PROCEDING.
EXPERIMENT IN A CORNER, WHERE ANY DAMAGE DONE WILL BE MINIMISED.
On modern paintings the problem is likely to be a build-up of dust, smoke, pet hair. In this case, make sure none of the paint shows any signs of cracks or flakes. You can then carefully dust the surface with a very soft, dry bristle brush.
Dedication
To clean a surface which is sticky, grimy, or oily, you may need to use a mild detergent solution. Generally, oil and water should never mix, as moisture can damage both the canvas and the impasto. Proceeding with caution, use brand new cotton buds dipped in a mixture of dish soap and warm water. Lightly dab the surface, DON`T wipe or rub the painting, nor allow so much moisture that it drips or runs.
