A quiz is an entertainment in which the knowledge of the contestant is tested by a series of questions. Quizzes come in many forms and can be played by teams or individuals. Questions can be of general knowledge or of highly specialized subjects.
Popularity
Originally made popular by radio programs such as Brain of Britain and Top of the form. Television turned quizzing into a major leisure time activity, with the lure of high profile quizzes and attractive prizes.
Location
With modern technology, a quiz can be competed across the country without the contestants needing to meet. Quizzes are competed in homes across the country, and anywhere where groups of people meet together socially.
Age
Any age can take part in a quiz, as quizzing is a test of knowledge. Some quizzes do restrict contestants to a maximum age (Top of the form), to find the most knowledgeable of an age category. some quizzes are for family to compete against family.
Ability
A sound general knowledge and an awareness of currant affairs, is a definite advantage as is a sound knowledge of any specialised activity from which questions may be asked.
Description
Weather competing as an individual or in a team, there are many quiz formats. A traditional quiz is made up of several rounds, that may be taken from headings such as, general knowledge, current affairs, sport, geography, history, spelling or an activity related to the organising host. each competitor is asked a question in turn. The competitor or team accruing the most points when all rounds are completed is declared the winner.
Dedication
As with phisical activities, mental activities benefit from regular exercise, only in this case exercise of the mind. Regularly attending quizzes and doing crosswords speed up the response time of the mind and increase the power of recall and deduction, where as reading and watching or listening to currant affairs programs increases general knowledge. There is know activity where practise and homework is more important, if you want to reach the highest levels.

The potential may be to win the league or tournament you are competing in. It may be to compete in one of the many high profile or valuable prize media based quizzes.
