Barrel Rolling is an extremely ancient tradition, properly of pagan origins, and associated with the flushing out and ritual burning of witches. Now part of the Guy Fawkes celebrations, burning barrels of tar are rolled around the local streets.
Popularity
Although a very localised activity, where held it is an annual event attracting thousands of spectators.
Location
This activity is limited to Devon and the west country of England. The Ottery ST Mary. bonfire celebrations being a notable example.
Age
This is a very dangerous activity and children are certainly not allowed to take part. As a spectical it attracts families and people of all ages, children must be strictly supervised.
Description
Barrel rollers carry the barrels of burning tar on their shoulders and protect their hands with dampened sacking. They run back and forth with the barrel until they can no longer stand the heat and then they pass it to the next person in line.
