Popularity
Skibobs were originally designed as means of transport in the Alps and it wasn't until the 1950s that the activities potential as a sport was first reconised.
Location
Skibob racing is very similar to Alpine Ski racing with all the same disciplines (Slalom, Giant Slalom, Parallel Slalom, Super-G and Downhill), and uses similar pistes for racecourses.
Description
Ski Bobs are essentially bikes that have skis instead of wheels. There are two skis, one in the back and one in the front. The front ski is attached to the handlebars for steering. snowbikes are for downhill only.
The rider sits astride the skibob, just like a bike, but the seating
position is much closer to the ground, and rather than pedals, the rider wears a short pair of foot skis to assist with their balance.
Potential
The international governing body for the sport, the Fédération Internationale de Skibob, organize a World Championships every year. There is also a World Cup circuit, similar to that of Alpine Skiing.
