Freestyle skiing is a popular event for individuals, it comprises of three events- ballet, aerials and moguls, contested on three very short courses ranging from 175 to 250m.
Ability
As with all combination sports a competence in each discipline involved is essential before embarking in freestyle skiing, also an ear for music and sound understanding of dance and movement, are desirable.
Description
Ballet consists of a 2 minute routine of spins, jumps, steps and acrobatic maneuvers, choreographed an set to music of the skiers choice. Aerials are started as skiers launch themselves off specially constructed snow jumps or kickers performing single double or triple somersaults with a variety of twists, and landing on a steep slope of softened snow . Two acrobatic jumps are performed. Moguls A series of high speed turns are performed down a steep slope, covered in large bumps or moguls.
Dedication
As in most combination sports especially those with a high artistic content, practise and dedication are essential. In the ballet section marks are awarded 50% for technical difficulty and 50% for composition and style. In Aerials marks are awarded 20% for quality of take off and height in the air, 50% for the form of the jump and 30% for the accuracy of landing. Moguls are scored 50% for the quality of turns, 25% for the speed of the run and 25% for the form of the jumps.
