Skittles is a very social game for an even number of players from two to twenty four, when played as a team game it is normally of five a side The participants roll or throw a ball or thick flat wooden disk known as a cheese, at nine skittles.
Popularity
Traditionally played throughout the country. both the skittles and the cheeses were made from wood, logs destined for the house fire being roughly shaped and used for the purpose.
Location
A very popular game played in the home, in a hall attached to the local pub or often contested at the local fete or show where a prize for the highest score was given, the prize often a young pig in the days when cottagers used to keep their own pig.
Age
A game played by all ages, a game that can be played by all the family, the youngest of children playing against elder children and adults. Cheeses being made to a weight that suit the strength of the individual player.

Skittles is a fun game that can be played by anyone who can roll or throw a cheese.
Description
Being such a social activity there is quite a range of local variations of the rules. Officially a bowling area (alley) is 21ft long to the front skittle by 3ft wide. The nine skittles are set in a diamond formation to the bowler, in a 4ft6in square. One point is scored for each skittle knocked over, the object of the game is knock over as many skittles as possible, each player has three throws, a maximum score of twenty seven points per round (chalk) typically three rounds per game (leg).
Dedication
At social levels no practise or dedication what so ever is necessary, however if you join a team or a league, like all competitive sport, regular practise is essential to achieve success. The outdoor game is normally played with cheeses which are thrown, the indoor game with balls which are bowled.

Skittles is closely associated to the game of Canadian five pin, and the modern technological game ten pin bowling. Skittles is often contested under the name of bowling for the pig.
Cost
Traditionally there were know costs associated with skittles, the equipment being found in the home log store, the exception being an entrance fee to a competition. Now a days there is sometimes a hire fee for a hall with a skittle ally, the equipment being supplied with the hall.
