Topiary is the training of trees, shrubs, herbs and vines into imaginative shapes, it takes pruning into the realms of sculpture. A single topiary creation can become both a conversation piece and the focal point of a garden.

Popularity
A well trained topiary is a popular favorite in any garden, The initial vision, the work and time spent can be seen and appreciated by everyone. Topiary was particularly popular in the early twentieth century, no garden would have been without one.

Ability
Start with a simple geometric shape, these are by far the easiest to maintain for a novice and an exciting project for a child to start, as the result is quicker to achieve.

Description
The first step in topiary is to pick your plant, a young plant normally an ever green such as yew or boxwood. Next decide on your shape either a geometric sphere or box or the more ambitious representational, dogs, birds wishing wells and chairs being particular favorites. make a sketch of what you want to achieve which must be kept and referred to. And then a process of constant pruning and a lot of patience The result is really worthwhile and something to be very proud of.

Topiary is certainly a pastime that needs dedication, constant pruning and encouraging are by far the most important steps to a successful outcome. The result is a living sculpture that will compete with any other medium used to create beatiful shapes in your garden.
