As Fell running is an extreme version of cross-country running, the Tough-Going Race ( Tough Guy Race ) is an extreme version of Fell running. An annual winter event for both male and female, designed to test both body and spirit to there limits.
Popularity
There are not many Tough going events held, but those that there are, are always well attended by both competitors and supporters.
Location
This event is held annually in Perton, Staffordshire, in the north of England, but attracts competitors from all over the country.
Age
The tough going event is certainly not an event for children. And it should only be attempted by experienced cross-country runners and preferably those who have Fell running experience.
Ability
To run the tough-going race it is necessary to have both the phisical stamina to complete the course, and the mental capability to cope with the phisical challenges while encountering extremely cold and wet conditions
Description
Tough going is an off road running race, held in mid winter over very undulating and difficult ground. the wetter or snowier the conditions the better. Competitors not only have to run the course but negotiate a series of hazards on route, consisting of culverts (pipes) submerged or partially submerged in water, varying height barriers to climb, some up to twelve feet in height, and obstacles to crawl through or under. a true test of stamina, mental strength and will power.
Dedication
As there are so few events held in the year, and the course and conditions are always different, tough going is not a sport needing dedicated practise. It does need a high level of fitness that can only be achieved from taking part in a combination of activities.
Potential
As the race conditions change for every race there are no records as such. The potential is to win on the day, To most however the potential is in the satisfaction of having completed a true personal challenge.
