Sombo also known as Sambo is a competitive modern martial art, developed by the military in Russia, in the early twentieth century. Sombo translated means self defence without a weapon.
Popularity
Sombo is recognised by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles as one of the four main forms of competitive amateur wrestling today, the others being Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling and Judo.
Location
Sombo is now widely competed throughout the world and is quickly gaining in popularity in the UK.
Description
Although it was originally a single system, there are now three generally recognized versions of Sombo: Sport Sombo stylistically similar to amateur wrestling or Judo. The competition is similar to Judo, but in contrast, Sombo allows all types of leg locks, while not allowing choke-holds. Self-defense Sombo, is similar to Aikijutsu, jujitsu or Aikido, and is based on self-defense application, Combat Sombo resembles modern mixed martial arts and includes extensive striking and grappling.
